Artist of the Month- Judy Gehrke

*Can you tell me a bit about your art-making process?

Even though you can't tell from this show I am a collage artist for the most part.  When I sit down at my desk I like to start with a background image that evokes a certain emotion then I just go through 1950's history books for hours until I find images that support that emotion.

*Do incorporate creativity-boosting activities into your daily
routine? If so what activities do you do?
I don't have a daily artistic routine but some days when I am at the studio but don't want to start making a new piece I will just cut things out of books.  I once spent an entire week trying to cut all of the birds out of a bird book.  Hundreds of them, I have an entire drawer full of birds.

*How would you describe your style of art?
Well this show is extremely simplified.  I think I was trying to hone in on the humor of it and reconcile that I am just sort of an asshole and that is okay.  Now that I am done drawing the sign language alphabet I think I can use these drawing to go back to collaging.

*What motivates you to create?
I usually create the most art when I need release.   If I'm happy my art sucks.

*Do you have a strong purpose or goal with your art?
 I wouldn't say a strong purpose.  Most of the time I would say to make people laugh.  If it's not funny then I think I try to create something warm and worn, like its always been on your wall.

*If you had advice for other aspiring artists what would it be?
Aspiring artist?  Get good at P.R.  You might be the most amazing artist ever but if you don't or can't go out there and sell yourself then no one will have any idea you even exist.
